Ringmoduliertes Rauschen

Ringmoduliertes Rauschen

Recorded Spatial Audio Performance for Klingt Gut! 2020/21 Symposium on Sound.

Winner of the symposium’s YOUNG ARTIST AWARD in the Category EXCELLENCE IN SOUND ART & SOUND DESIGN – SPATIAL AUDIO.

Depending on how you look at it, this recorded performance lies somewhere between room installation, live-soundscape and experimental music.

SYNOPSIS:

In a time of ambisonics rendering and big multi-loudspeaker-arrays, the five performers go back to spatial-audios roots. They take inspiration from the simple techniques of quadrophony and the acousmonium while questioning classical concert formats. Not only the concept of the stage but also the listening sweetspot are deconstructed. The professional sound studio or modern concert hall is left behind in favor of the outside world. Because of this, the room plays an important role: Its complex acoustical properties become part of the sound design and create a conversation between the space and the musicians. The goal is not to make the room disappear and create the illusion of a different one but to use it as a creative tool. How does it react to different sounds? How does our perception of it change? How are the sounds shaped by it? Can the room be made audible?

The sonic content walks the line between concrete and abstract, soundscape and music. It utilizes analog synthesis, spatial recordings and manipulated electric guitar. Spatial positioning and movement is achieved by a variety of means, from eurorack voltage controlled amplifiers to custom max/msp patches controlled by joysticks and motion sensors.
